The Problem

Central Ohio is home to several stinging insect species that build nests on and around homes, and each one presents different risks. Paper wasps build the familiar open, umbrella-shaped nests under eaves, porch ceilings, deck railings, and inside grills and mailboxes. They're generally less aggressive than other species but will sting repeatedly if their nest is disturbed. Yellowjackets are far more dangerous — they build large colonies in underground burrows, wall voids, and attic spaces, and they are aggressively territorial, especially in late summer and early fall when colonies reach peak size and food becomes scarce. A single yellowjacket nest can contain thousands of workers, and unlike honeybees, each one can sting multiple times. Bald-faced hornets build the large, enclosed paper nests you see hanging from tree branches, under eaves, and on the sides of buildings. They are extremely aggressive when defending their nest and can mobilize dozens of workers in seconds. Mud daubers, by contrast, are solitary wasps that build small mud tubes on walls and under overhangs — they're rarely aggressive and are actually beneficial because they prey on spiders, but their nests are unsightly and can indicate other pest issues. The real danger with stinging insects is allergic reaction. The CDC reports that insect stings cause more deaths in the United States each year than snake bites, spider bites, and shark attacks combined. Even people who have been stung before without a severe reaction can develop anaphylaxis with subsequent stings. Nests near doorways, walkways, children's play areas, and outdoor dining spaces create ongoing risk every time someone passes by.

Our Approach

M2's stinging insect service starts with identification — because the species determines the approach, the timing, and the safety precautions. Our technician will locate the nest, identify the species, assess the size and accessibility of the colony, and explain the treatment plan before any work begins. For exposed nests like paper wasp nests and bald-faced hornet nests, we apply a targeted knockdown product directly to the nest, typically in the early morning or late evening when the colony is least active and most workers are inside. We then remove the nest entirely to prevent reuse and to eliminate the pheromone signals that attract new queens to the same location in subsequent years. For yellowjacket nests in the ground, we treat the entry hole with a residual dust that workers carry into the colony, eliminating it from within. For yellowjackets nesting in wall voids — one of the more complex scenarios — we apply product into the void through the entry point and any accessible gaps, then seal the exterior opening once activity has ceased. It's critical not to seal the opening first, because trapped yellowjackets will chew through interior drywall to escape, creating a far worse situation inside your home. We never recommend that homeowners attempt to remove wasp or hornet nests themselves, especially yellowjacket and bald-faced hornet nests. The risk of multiple stings is high, and agitated colonies can pursue a perceived threat 50 feet or more from the nest. Professional protective equipment and products designed for rapid knockdown are essential for safe removal. Beyond nest removal, we provide preventive treatment of common nesting sites — eaves, soffits, porch ceilings, deck framing, and shed overhangs — using a residual product that deters new nest construction throughout the season. This is especially valuable in the spring, when overwintering queens emerge and scout for nesting locations. Treating these areas in April or May can prevent nests from establishing in the first place. Peak season for stinging insect calls in Ohio is late July through September, when colonies are at their largest and most defensive. Yellowjackets become particularly aggressive in the fall as the colony prepares to die off and workers compete for dwindling food sources — this is when stings are most likely. If you notice increased wasp or hornet activity around your home, don't wait for someone to get stung.

Why M2

Stinging insect removal is one of those jobs where cutting corners has immediate consequences — and not just for the technician. And we explain what we found so you know what to watch for going forward. A real person answers our phone at (740) 652-5292, and we can often respond to urgent stinging insect situations within 24 to 48 hours. We've safely removed nests from soffits, attics, underground burrows, swing sets, wall voids, and just about every other location you can imagine across Central Ohio. Whether it's a single paper wasp nest or a massive yellowjacket colony, we handle it so you don't have to.
