The Problem

Central Ohio is home to several ant species that regularly invade homes and businesses, each presenting different challenges. Odorous house ants are the most frequent kitchen invader — tiny brown ants that release a rotten coconut smell when crushed. They form massive colonies with multiple queens, which means killing the ants you can see barely scratches the surface. Pavement ants nest in cracks in driveways, sidewalks, and foundations, pushing up small mounds of sand and finding their way indoors through slab gaps and expansion joints. But the species that causes the most concern in Ohio is the carpenter ant. These large black ants don't eat wood the way termites do — instead, they excavate it to build their nests, hollowing out structural timbers, window frames, and wall voids. Carpenter ant damage is slower than termite damage, but left unchecked for a few seasons, they can compromise joists, sill plates, and framing members. Homeowners often notice coarse sawdust-like frass piled beneath baseboards or hear faint rustling inside walls. Because carpenter ants prefer moist or previously water-damaged wood, their presence can also signal a moisture problem you didn't know you had. Ohio's warm, humid summers and wooded suburban lots create ideal conditions for all three species, and DIY sprays typically just scatter colonies without eliminating them — a behavior entomologists call "budding" that actually makes the problem worse.

Our Approach

Effective ant control requires identifying the species first, because the treatment that wipes out odorous house ants can be completely wrong for carpenter ants. Every M2 ant service begins with a thorough inspection. We identify the species, locate active trails, and trace them back to the nest or entry point. For odorous house ants and pavement ants, we deploy professional-grade bait systems that worker ants carry back to the colony, including the queens. Unlike contact sprays that kill on the spot but leave the colony intact, bait transfer eliminates the entire colony from the inside out. We combine this with a perimeter treatment around your foundation to create a chemical barrier that intercepts new foraging trails before they reach your living space. For carpenter ants, the approach is more involved. We need to locate the primary nest — which may be in a dead tree, woodpile, or stump up to 300 feet from your house — as well as any satellite colonies inside the structure. We use non-repellent liquid treatments and targeted dust applications injected into wall voids, around plumbing penetrations, and into the galleries themselves. If the infestation has been active for an extended period, we'll recommend a moisture inspection to address the conditions that attracted them in the first place. All treatments include a follow-up visit to confirm elimination and reapply perimeter protection as needed. We also provide specific recommendations to reduce future risk: trimming branches that contact the house, correcting grade drainage, storing firewood away from the foundation, and sealing utility entry points. Ohio's ant season ramps up in late March as soil temperatures rise, peaks through the summer, and trails off in October — but carpenter ants active indoors during winter are a strong sign of a nest inside the heated structure.

Why M2

M2 operates on our Golden Rule+ philosophy: treat every customer the way we'd want to be treated, then go further. For ant control, that means we won't sell you a one-size-fits-all spray and call it a day. We identify what you're actually dealing with, explain exactly what we're going to do, and make sure the colony is eliminated — not just pushed to a different room. A real person answers our phone at (740) 652-5292. We use unmarked vehicles for discreet service, because you don't need a billboard parked in your driveway. And if the ants come back between scheduled treatments, so do we — at no additional cost. We've been solving ant problems across Central Ohio for over a decade, from Lancaster kitchens to Columbus commercial buildings, and we bring that same level of care to every single job.
