The Problem

Three cockroach species cause the vast majority of infestations in Central Ohio, and each one requires a different approach. German cockroaches are the most common indoor roach and by far the hardest to eliminate. They're small (about half an inch), light brown with two dark stripes behind the head, and they reproduce at a staggering rate — a single female's egg case contains 30 to 40 nymphs, and she can produce a new case every few weeks. Within months, a handful of German roaches becomes hundreds or thousands. They live almost exclusively indoors, preferring the warm, humid spaces behind refrigerators, inside dishwashers, around plumbing under sinks, and in the crevices of cabinetry. American cockroaches are the large, reddish-brown roaches (sometimes called "water bugs") that typically enter homes through floor drains, sewer connections, and gaps around utility penetrations — they're common in basements and crawl spaces of older Central Ohio homes. Oriental cockroaches, glossy and dark, thrive in cool, damp environments like basement window wells, drains, and mulch beds against foundations. Beyond the revulsion factor, cockroaches are a documented health hazard. The EPA and multiple medical studies have identified cockroach allergens — proteins found in their droppings, shed skins, and saliva — as a significant trigger for asthma, especially in children. German roaches in particular produce large quantities of these allergens because they live in such close proximity to food preparation areas. They also mechanically spread bacteria including salmonella and E. coli by walking across contaminated surfaces and then across your countertops, dishes, and food.

Our Approach

Effective cockroach elimination starts with identifying the species and understanding the scope of the infestation, because the treatment for German roaches is fundamentally different from the treatment for American or Oriental roaches. For German cockroaches, M2 uses an integrated protocol built around three proven tools. First, professional-grade gel baits placed precisely in cracks, crevices, hinges, and harborage areas where roaches are actively hiding. Gel bait works through secondary transfer — roaches that feed on the bait return to the harborage, die, and are consumed by other roaches, spreading the active ingredient through the population. Second, insect growth regulators (IGRs) that disrupt the roach reproductive cycle by preventing nymphs from maturing into breeding adults. This is critical because German roaches reproduce so quickly that killing adults alone can't keep pace with the egg cases already laid. Third, crack-and-crevice treatment of wall voids, cabinet joints, electrical outlets, plumbing penetrations, and appliance motors where roaches harbor. We don't do baseboard spraying — it's ineffective against German roaches and can actually make the problem worse by repelling roaches away from bait placements. For American and Oriental cockroaches, the approach shifts to exterior and moisture management. We treat entry points — floor drains, sewer pipe penetrations, weep holes, and foundation cracks — and apply residual products in basement and crawl space harborage areas. We also recommend addressing the moisture conditions that attract them in the first place. Every cockroach service includes follow-up visits to monitor sticky trap counts, reapply bait, and verify that the population is collapsing. German roach treatments typically require two to three service visits over four to six weeks to break the reproductive cycle completely. We know a job isn't done until the monitors are clean. We've handled cockroach infestations across Central Ohio, including a case in Pickaway County where we were called in after another pest control company had treated the same property repeatedly without success. Their approach relied on repellent sprays that scattered the roaches into new areas of the building without eliminating the colony. We used targeted bait and IGR placement, identified the primary harborage areas they'd missed, and eliminated the infestation within three treatment cycles.

Why M2

Cockroach infestations carry a stigma that makes people embarrassed to ask for help — and some pest control companies take advantage of that by selling unnecessary recurring contracts or using scare tactics. M2's Golden Rule+ philosophy means we treat you with respect, explain exactly what we're dealing with, and give you an honest timeline for elimination. We use unmarked vehicles because discretion matters. A real person answers our phone at (740) 652-5292. And our goal is always elimination, not reduction — especially with German roaches, where "reducing" the population just means waiting for them to bounce back. We've been solving roach problems across Central Ohio for over a decade, and we bring that same expertise and care to every job, whether it's a single-family home in Lancaster or a commercial kitchen in Columbus.
